Installing on macOS

  1. Download the installer - Go to clarife.app and click the Download button in the Companion section. The .dmg file will download to your Mac.
  2. Open the DMG - Double-click the downloaded .dmg file. A window will appear with the clarife capture icon and the Applications folder.
  3. Drag to Applications - Drag the clarife capture icon into the Applications folder.
  4. Launch the app - Open clarife capture from your Applications folder or Spotlight. On first launch, macOS may show a security prompt - click Open to allow.
  5. Grant permissions - clarife capture needs Screen Recording permission to capture screenshots. macOS will prompt you to grant this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording.

⚠️ Warning: You must grant Screen Recording permission for clarife capture to function. Without it, screenshots will be blank or the app will not be able to capture.

Installing on Windows (Microsoft Store)

  1. Open the Microsoft Store page - go to clarife.app/companion on a Windows PC, or open the app page in the Microsoft Store directly.
  2. Click Get - the Store installs the app automatically.
  3. Launch the app - find it in the Start menu as clarife capture.

ℹ️ Info: On Windows the app does not require any additional permissions to capture the screen.

Tray icon

After launch, clarife capture runs in the background: in the menu bar on macOS, in the system tray (next to the clock) on Windows. Click the icon to access:

  • Quick capture (region or window)
  • Recent captures
  • Settings
  • Sync status

Auto-start on login

To have clarife capture start automatically when you log in:

  1. Open clarife capture settings
  2. Enable Launch at login

On macOS you can also add it manually via System Settings > General > Login Items. On Windows the startup entry appears in Task Manager under Startup apps - if you disable it there, it can only be re-enabled there as well.

Updating

On macOS clarife capture checks for updates automatically - when a new version is available, you will be prompted to download and install it. On Windows updates are delivered automatically by the Microsoft Store, so the app has no update check button.

Can I install clarife capture on Linux?

clarife capture is available for macOS and Windows. On Linux, use clarife's web editor - paste screenshots directly with Ctrl+V.

How do I uninstall the app?

On macOS drag clarife capture from your Applications folder to the Trash; to remove all data, also delete ~/Library/Application Support/app.clarife.capture. On Windows open the Start menu, right-click clarife capture and choose Uninstall - app data is removed automatically.

The app doesn't appear in the menu bar / tray

Ensure clarife capture is running (macOS: Activity Monitor, Windows: Task Manager). On macOS the icon may be hidden behind other menu bar icons - hold Cmd and drag icons to rearrange. On Windows click the Show hidden icons arrow on the taskbar and drag the icon onto the taskbar if needed.
